Therapy on The Farm
Sometimes a different setting creates space for something new
Therapy can look different here. Experiential and animal-assisted approaches create opportunities to explore thoughts, emotions, relationships, and patterns through movement, interaction, observation, and in-the-moment experiences.
What is Experiential Therapy?
Experiential therapy goes beyond talking about experiences by creating opportunities to explore thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and patterns as they happen in the moment.
Sessions may incorporate movement, observation, problem-solving, creativity, the environment, or working alongside an animal. Each experience is intentional and connected to the client’s individual needs and treatment goals.
What unfolds in the experience becomes part of the therapeutic work.
Animals respond to what is happening in the moment. Through behavior and body language, they offer real-time opportunities to notice communication, boundaries, relationships, confidence, flexibility, and emotional awareness.
Animals give us something real to respond to.
Why Animals?
Horses
Horses are highly responsive to their environment and to the people interacting with them. Their size, sensitivity, and movement can create meaningful opportunities to explore trust, confidence, boundaries, communication, leadership, and emotional awareness.
No riding is involved or required.
Goats
Goats bring a very different energy. They are curious, social, playful, independent—and sometimes wonderfully uncooperative.
Their individual personalities and herd relationships create natural opportunities to explore flexibility, frustration tolerance, problem-solving, relationships, boundaries, communication, and self-awareness.
What Happens in Therapy?
Sessions may include walking alongside a horse, interacting with goats, observing herd dynamics, completing activities, or simply using the outdoor setting. Each experience is shaped by the client’s needs and goals, with what unfolds in the moment becoming part of the therapeutic work.
Who Can Benefit?
Experiential and animal-assisted therapy can support children, teens, and adults who benefit from movement, hands-on experiences, and learning in the moment.
It may support work on anxiety, OCD, ADHD, emotional regulation, self-esteem, relationships, communication, life transitions, and personal growth.
You Don’t Have to Like Goats
Interaction with animals is never required. Some clients work directly alongside the horses or goats, while others prefer observing from a distance or simply using the farm environment as part of therapy.
Experiences are adapted to each client’s comfort level, boundaries, and treatment goals. There’s no “right” way to participate.
